Thursday “ The Soul of Capitalism. ”   After reading,  Applications :  list 3   topics the text deals with.  What are some  "tells"  for the theme of a text? For each topic, come up with a theme statement.  Synthesis essays  - what are they? Analysis/interpretation.  1st get familiar with the question: verbs and keywords.  2nd read the context info.  3rd read with a pencil in hand. Read and label.  4th always make an outline - that is why the gods created the T-chart.  What makes a quality  Synthesis Essay?  We will look at the rubric, and score some student examples. Friday 1. Identify the evidence of quality on the paragraph you wrote yesterday. Circle the standards description that best fits for your ideas, organization, word choices, conventions. Write a comment about where you point out something you think you did well, and something still need to work to improve. Hand in again. 2. Read the text, "No Canada. ”  In paragraph form and in a least 150 words, respond to this prompt: Discuss Marche ’ s use of persuasive techniques in the text  “ No Canada. ”  Support your response with specific references to the text. Friday At the beginning of the class there was some time to read your banned book. Next, there was some time to work on the embedding quotes sheet. For the remainder of the class, we did a review game to practice essay/no-fiction terms and devices. Thursday Here are the notes that were up on the screen for today's class. We did not end up doing item #2. 3 O’Clock partners - continue working on quote blending 10 minutes. You should have completed to the end of question 7 by today. Parallelism - return work from yesterday. Questions? Do the new exercise and then give it to a classmate to mark. Friday We did some more practice embedding quotes with partners at the beginning of the class. Next we did a roudy game of Kahoot related to non-fiction terms and devices. At the end of the class, I assigned a t-chart plan for a response. The topic was to evaluate how you think the author of "Pardon Me, I'm Canadian" would respond to the news item (see link) below. The top of the t-chart should contain your thesis statement and in the chart you should outline at least 3 points you would make to support your thesis, and 3 pieces of evidence (quotes with page numbers in brackets) you would use as examples.
