Monday, October 26 - Friday, October 30

Friday I was away today and Mr Elliot was in charge! Thursday Draft 1 of this piece is due on Monday. Today was dedicated to time for working on the synthesis piece about The Bastard and Faking It. Wednesday Your writing task today : Assess which text, The Bastard or Faking It, demonstrates the greatest drawbacks being an imposter poses to living a happy life. You are expected to write  a multi-paragraph (3 or more paragraphs) essay of at least 300 words, to answer question the above question. Plan your work first! The rubric for this essay is in the links section of this blog. Tuesday In preparation for tomorrow's in-class write (synthesis essay) we completed the criteria for a quality synthesis piece based on the examples I went over with you. Afterwards, we took a final look at The Bastard to identify: flashback, foreshadowing, irony and symbolism. Monday, October 19 - Thursday, October 22

Thursday I was away today at a workshop. I left copies of The Bastard short story for everyone so you could finish reading it. Below are my directions for the TOC: Students should read their novel for the first 10-15 minutes Give them copies of “The Bastard,” but please ask them to refrain from writing on them so I can use them with my other grade 12 classes. We almost finished reading the story yesterday in class. They need to read the last page. After reading, they should complete the notes they took about any mention of: the 7 Deadly Sins or animals. Next activity: In pairs, or groups of 3 if necessary, they should prepare a rubric containing a set of criteria for the quintessential villain – encourage them to research this on their devices so they get a full set of criteria. Tuesday, October 13 - Friday, October 16

Friday I was very impressed by the Creative Responses that were presented today. We will listen the remainder of the presentations next week. Thursday We reviewed basic essay structure in class today and reviewed the elements of a good thesis. For the remainder of the class time, people had an opportunity to work on the Creative Response which is due tomorrow. Wednesday For those of you who were away today, I brought up the issue of absences from this class which seem to be increasing with each week that passes. While many of the absences are excused for illness or sports, etc. an equal number are unexcused absences. At this point it is my responsibility to contact parents and the administration to make them aware of the situation. With the level of absenteeism it is no surprise that there are also a number of students with missing assignments. Friday After silent reading we did the quiz on short story terms and marked it. I returned the draft character responses to The Painted Door. The good copy of these is due on Wednesday. For the remainder of the class there was time to work on the Canadian voice chart, the Venn diagram for the two poems, or the creative response. Presentations of the Creative response to either Song for the Homeless or Living Room will be done on Friday, Oct16. Thursday Quiz on short story terms tomorrow! We practiced some of the short story terms using Today's Meet. Afterwards, we returned to the subject of the Creative Response. I threw out a few more ideas for responses: deliver a monologue in-role, PSA, diary entry, film trailer, sketches, video, drawings, sculpture, interview, short play, imaginative narrative.
