Thursday

1. To complete our celebration of the poetry of Plath, you are going to write some Flash Fiction and perhaps get published and/or earn $$$!
Your task is to pick ONE of the poems we covered in class and write a flash fiction story based on the poem. Your story can be either 53 words long (Prime Number Magazine contest) or 48-52 words (Dribble Flash Fiction contest).
2. Place your story into the collaboration space in Office 365. Identify yourself using only your "nom de plume" which will be: first name: your mother's maiden name; last name: your first pet. For example, my "nom de plume" would be: Ferguson Button. Place a second copy into your Assignment folder; call the page: flash fiction contest.
3. If you want to collaborate with another student, that is fine, just come up with 2 different flash fiction stories. Put both of your noms de plume on the work for the collaboration space AND in the Assignment space.
4. Even if you don't win a prize from the contests below, we will have a class competition. I have one rule before I go out and buy prizes: everyone present today must submit a flash fiction. We will judge the entries in class next Thursday.
5, https://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/10/03/short-and-sweet-reading-and-writing-flash-fiction/comment-page-1/?_r=0  Here is a backgrounder on writing flash fiction.

Here is a good 50 word story about an image:

The first time the balloons came, it was raining. They emerged from the clouds, plump rotting plums, panting out thick gold coins that rattled down our streets. The thunder spoke: ‘consider this payment in advance.’ Today we saw them approaching, we do not know what they have come to take.

Here's another 50 word story...

She places everything on the table; ordered, neat.
People will think she's a professional. Together.
Newspaper. Latte.
Empty bag at her feet, timer on her ancient phone to tell her when to leave.
She can pretend it's a meeting, not the launderette.
They don't know she has nowhere to go.

Prime Number Magazine 53-Word Story Contest

In case you’re wondering, 53 is a prime number. And no, titles are not included in the word count (so bulk that sucker up to cheat a bit). The theme for 2016 is “Madness,” which is appropriate for a contest in March.

  • Cost: Free
  • Prize: Publication
  • Word Limit: 53

Dribble Flash Fiction

A dribble is a flash fiction story that uses around 50 words. That is the challenge of this contest. Write a story (on any topic) using 50 words. The title does not count towards the word count. The submitted work must be between 48 - 52 words. If the word count is over or under this amount the work will not be presented to the contest committee. Online word processor is an estimate only. We recommend the use of a computer word processor to count the words.

The winner takes away a $100 cash prize. All writers will receive feedback for their submission.

3. Complete the annotation of Sylvia Plath's poems according to the instructions at the 4 stations in the classroom.
Station #1 annotate the poem "Mirror" - write ALL over it noting, word choices that stand out, figurative language (metaphor, simile, etc.), sound devices (alliteration, rhyme, consonance, euphony, etc.), who is speaker? setting? imagery? What the heck is the message about life???
Station #2 identify the similarities and differences between "In Plaster" and "Choices". Write all over your copy of "In Plaster" - this is a challenging poem.
Station #3 "Mushrooms" is this poem overall a positive or negative poem? Again, write all over the poem.
Station #4 Find a Plath poem of your own online and print a copy. On the poem, identify, in a series of sentences, things that you identify with in the poem. Try to come up with at least 4 points.
4. Tomorrow, we will be doing various activities involving the above poems. Please ensure you are prepared by completing today's work.
