2. Create an outline for a compare and contrast/synthesis essay. The outline is due at the end of class. You thesis choices are: Margot and Wilson are top predators, or Wilson and Macomber are both cowards. You can modify the thesis/prompts if you wish; for example, you can argue that Macomber is more courageous than Wilson. Your plan for the essay must include an introductory paragraph to the essay.

Also, identify "ruptures" as we cover the story - places where the narrative "becomes aware of itself"; the standard, chronological structure breaks down;
5. Questions on "A Short Story."
6. Graffiti the quotes from the story.

 Trigger Warning - we will begin reading a short story tomorrow that deals with sexual abuse. Please let me know privately if this story cause you emotional distress, and I will give you a different story to read.

4. Return essay plans for The Bastard and Faking It. General feedback.
5. Conver-station - discussion of the questions for SHLOFM.
6. Next essay plan is for SHLOFM - Compare and Contrast/ Synthesis essay. You thesis choices are: Margot and Wilson are top predators, or Wilson and Macomber are both cowards. Essay plan is due on Thursday, December 1. There will be some time to do type the plan on Thursday. You will submit a plan for the essay as well as the introductory paragraph to the essay.

Monday, January 11 - Friday, January 15

Friday At the beginning of the class, reading time was made available for everyone to tackle more of the Hemingway story. We will use this story to help review synthesis essays. I ran through some review of synthesis essay writing, and put a poster up in the room that shows what things to use in a synthesis essay plan. We will look at this in more detail on Monday. Thursday There is so much great literature in the world, but one writer everyone should read (in my opinion) is Hemingway. Today we did a brief bit of background on Hemingway via the Interwebs and through the depiction of him in Midnight in Paris. I read the first six pages of the story "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" aloud; somehow the class deteriorated into the sounds African animals make (my fault, I think - although I do think I do a particularly strong zebra imitation).
