- After reading - look at the handout for a “Close Reading” of a poem. Pick one of Vermette’s poems (blue jay, family, or northendluvsong) and do a close reading by annotating the poem copy you received. Remember the 3 levels of reading - 1. basic comprehension of the words on the page - 2. How does the poet say what she says - structure, diction, figurative language - 3. Evaluate, interpret the BIG IDEAS in the poem - what is the message about life, the universe and everything?
- Write a stand alone response to one of Vermette's poems. Discuss one of the poems and the following quote from Vermette: “ I wanted to show the beauty of broken things.” Don’t forget the requirements for a quality stand alone response. REMEMBER CLOSE READING! - Response to “Nerd Alert” article was due on Friday. Provided I get it today, no penalty. I will record it as late.
- Quick revisit - the “6” response to Dumka - write all over your copy and keep for reference.
- On the new rubric, self-assess - using a highlighter - based on the criteria. Next, on your copy of the Nerd Alert response identify where you have met the criteria. Based on how well you have met the criteria, give yourself a percentage. If most of the criteria are: “Exceeding” give yourself 86% or 90% or 100%
“Fully meeting” give yourself 73% or 80% or 85%
“Adequately meeting” give yourself 62% or 67% or 72%
“Barely meeting” give yourself 50% or 55% or 59%
Please provide a BRIEF written explanation for why you feel you have earned the above grade BASED ON THE RUBRIC. Hand this in. You will get your mark tomorrow.
