Today is a work period for the Infographic. Because I am away today, we will discuss how to submit your work on Monday.
Thursday
- Tomorrow is the due date for the Infographic. The library is booked for tomorrow if you want to finish it up? Submission is electronic - we can discuss this on Monday.
- Mark the multiple choice from yesterday.
- Quick run through of elegies and sonnets. Add in pastoral, pathos. Also, fable and didactic! Then maybe allegory, aside and soliloquy.
- Exam stuff: parts of the exam.
Wednesday
1.
Silent reading for the first 10-15 minutes of
class.
2. Rest of the poetry quiz. Time limited! You have 35
minutes to do this ONLY – practice for the Provincial Exam. Quiz – response to
a poem “Personal Helicon.” Test conditions please: No discussion of the poem
between classmates. No phone use.
Put all answers to the
multiple choice and your written response to the question on your own lined
paper. As well, no names on their papers, only student numbers.
3.
Elegy – from yesterday. Finish
looking at the elegy by explaining at the bottom of each sample elegy (dark
yellow sheet) why, based on the definition, these are elegies. This should be a
few sentences, or neatly made points clearly written so I can check your understanding tomorrow.
4.
The sonnet – using your phones, complete the
handout. There is a video link you can check out – the one at the top of the
handout is incorrect, so I have put the correct one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1i7XXq7fKy8 . Define sonnet,
topics for sonnets, elements of Italian and English sonnets. For each sonnet
example, neatly write beside it how what elements it has that conform to the
sonnet genre.
Tuesday
- Quiz: Poetry WEDNESDAY - poem response section of quiz
- RETURN TO LIBRARY FRIDAY? poem for Infographic/analysis assignment. Think about this question when choosing a poem: Can poetry contribute to our understanding of ourselves and our lives?

- Elegy - "O Captain, My Captain"The elegy began as an ancient Greek form and is traditionally written in response to the death of a person or group. Though similar in function, the elegy is distinct from the epitaph, ode, and eulogy: the epitaph is very brief; the ode solely exalts; and the eulogy is most often written in formal prose. The elements of a traditional elegy mirror three stages of loss. First, there is a lament, where the speaker expresses grief and sorrow, then praise and admiration of the idealized dead, and finally consolation and solace.
- You have 5 minutes to research the poem in preparation for group discussion.
- Elegy - "O Captain, My Captain" in groups of 4-5, silently re-read the poem. As you read select one phrase or line that stands out for you - underline it. Take turns reading your lines/phrase to your group members. When you read your line, you do not discuss it, but the people in your group must, one at a time, comment on the line. When they have all offered a comment, it is your turn to say why you selected the line.
- DUE TODAY: Pick one of the 3 love poems. Write all over it / annotate your own copy it using the steps of a Close Reading.
- DUE TODAY STEP #5 - Pick another one of the 3 love poems. Write all over it / annotate it, answering the following questions: What evidence can you find of cultural influences/references in this poem? What evidence can you find that this poem is influenced by the society in which it was written? What evidence can you provide that this poem was written in a specific geographical area? What evidence in the poem points to it being produced during a particular point in history?
- RETURN TO LIBRARY to select a poem for Infographic/analysis assignment. Think about this question when choosing a poem: Can poetry contribute to our understanding of ourselves and our lives?
