Tuesday
I am away today at a workshop related to the new curriculum.
I have marked your paragraphs, but I will hand them back to you tomorrow. The thing that stood out the most was how well most of you organized the response with an introduction and conclusion. The other thing that stood out was how well you embedded quotes!
Here is what you should work on today:
1. Silent reading for the first 15 minutes.
2. Complete the work on categorizing transitional phrases.
3. For each of the 8 different categories of transitional phrases, write 2 sentences and connect them with the appropriate transition. Underline the transition. Label the example as I have done
Example:
CONTRAST/DIFFERENCE
I have not run further than 10km in the past four months. Nevertheless, I have signed-up for a 20km race in May.
4. Read: "When Canada Met Andy". Before reading, go online and search for examples of "Andy Warhol's artwork." Record the name of 5 pieces of his art that you viewed. During reading, write on your copy of the text the MIPs (most important points) that the author is trying to get across about Canada's reaction to Warhol's art.
Save the work from today in your folder.
- Don't forget to talk to me about a draft 2 of your No Canada response if you scored below 15/30.
- Edit sheet based on errors in No Canada response paragraphs. - QUIZ MONDAY
- Briefly discuss "When Canada Met Andy." Why are we reading this? Warhol's art vs Hap's art. Groups of 4, MIPs on placemat. Decide on BIG IDEA and place it in the center. Walk around review.
- Next text to read “The Soul of Capitalism.” Before reading: Walkabout review - Recollections - What is capitalism? During reading: Insights into Hap’s character based on his progress through the art gallery. After reading: Applications, theme and theme “tells."
- Challenge your “elbow partner” to a parallelism smack down @ http://www.chompchomp.com/structure01/structure01.01.htm Take turns answering the questions. Keep score… I might have something for winners : )
