Friday
Below please find the notes I left for Mr Allen.
1.     Silent reading for first 10-15 minutes.
2.     Hand out the copy of Wordsmith. Return their papers with the paragraph answers to the poem analysis practice we did last class. Mark the multiple choice together. Let them know that their scores are a little low on the paragraph (remind them this was a practice only – scores don’t count) because they read the poem fairly literally and didn’t deal with the extended metaphor. Point out the title of the poem; how does “Wordsmith” relate to the poem? The father is a man who doesn’t communicate well. He is working on the house of his adult son or daughter (the speaker in the poem). The father clearly has trouble communicating with words and shows his love of his, now grown up child, by working hard to make his son/daughter’s house a “perfect sentence.” Please spend 10 minutes going over the poem again so they can see where they missed the metaphor.
3.     Please have students separate their desks for the poetry terms and devices quiz. They are to complete the matching and multiple choice on the supplied answer sheet. They are to write another paragraph today about the poem “Prelude to Jumping in the River.” The question is all about metaphor, but remind them to think figuratively NOT just literally!

4.     If time remains, you could mark the multiple choice about Prelude. I have attached key.

Thursday
Parent Teacher Interview Day
Don't forget there is a quiz tomorrow on poetry terms & devices.

Wednesday

More samples of infographics below! Also, don't forget to check more examples from the link on the right side of this blog. Remember that the final day for sending me your infographic is Friday, November 27. After that point, I will have moved on to evaluating other assignments and yours will have to wait until much later in the term.
Today we went over what a pastoral poem is and then considered the meaning of didactic - a text/performance that has moral instruction or a lesson as its purpose, as opposed to a text meant purely for entertainment. On a related note, I read some fables and in partners everyone tried to guess the moral of the story. In the final 30 minutes, we did a practice poem reading and response of the kind you will do on the Provincial Exam. I have scored these and will hand them back on Friday and we can discuss the results.

Tuesday
It is nice to be able to brighten up the blog with some samples of student work!
Today we took a look at some of the poetry term "wants" from the "Gots and Wants" list that we created in class yesterday. Although it isn't on the exam, we took a look at metonymy and synecdoche. Metonymy is from Greek and means "change of name. " Metonymy is a figure of speech in which a thing or concept is called not by its own name but rather by the name of something associated in meaning with that thing or conceptAn example of meonymy is: The Crown vs Smith (crown represents the country/government)
Synecdoche means "simultaneous understanding." It is a figure of speech in which a part can represent the whole. For example: saying "nice wheels" when referring to a car.
As well during today's class, you did a practice test on poetic terms and devices. We went over the multiple choice part today. The poem response (practice) section will be done tomorrow in class.

Monday
We began by discussing the poetry analysis infographics. Please email them to me and I will endeavour to put them on this blog. If that fails, then I will evaluate them from the email that you send to: dadamsonline@gmail.com. Please ensure I have received your emailed assignment no later than Wednesday, November 25 (one month from Christmas!).
Tomorrow there will be a practice quiz on the poetry terms. As well, you will read a poem and do a response like the "stand alone" response expected of you on the Provincial Exam. I will score your paragraph out of "6" and this is also only for practice. The real test will occur on Friday, November 27.
For the remainder of the class we strategized about exam/test writing and preparedness. I will take the ideas the class put forward and use them this term to help prepare the class for the English 12 Exam.
