Thursday & Friday

I have booked the laptops in the library for you to use on Thursday and Friday.

Poetry Assignment:
Poem analysis presented in an infographic.

Rubric:
The infographic rubric is in the links section to the right of this post. Make sure you scroll down the rubric document to see the full details about the assignment.

STEP 1:
Choose a poem. You may use any of the poems we have covered in class (or with Mr. Elliot). If you didn't get a chance to speak to me on Wednesday, best to play it safe and pick from the choices below.
- an ode from Pablo Neruda
- a Shakespearean sonnet
- any poem you like from the site: Poetry in Voice

STEP 2:
Thursday, you should probably spend a good chunk of time on analyzing your poem. To carry-out your analysis, complete the orange "Close Reading of a Poem" sheet. I have made extra copies and left them with the TOC. You can do research about the poem and the poet online, but don't forget to cite any sources of information you use in your infographic.

STEP 3:
Think about the PURPOSE, AUDIENCE and MESSAGE for your infographic. Look at some infographics to gather ideas.

STEP 4:
Find a web site that has a free application that allows you to create infographics. Do be thoughtful in your choice - some of these "free" apps allow only limited use; you have to pay to get the really useful features.

STEP 5
Begin to design your infographic. A successful infographic relies on a strong, clear structure. Your poem analysis infographic should strive to be: accurate, informative, clear, beautiful. Here are some examples of poetry related infographics:

If you cannot see any links in the space above, move your cursor around in the area and they should appear.

STEP 6
Publish your infographic. It is due on Monday. No need to print it, or email it. We will discuss publishing options in class on Monday. My hope is to have them posted on this blog.

Wednesday
There were quite a number of students away today due to a presentation in the Multipurpose room. I am away tomorrow and Friday. I asked all students present to complete a teacher evaluation on me for term 1 - for those who were away, I will ask you to do the same on Monday. For the remainder of the class, I outlined what the poetry assignment is.

Please be advised that today was the day to decide whether you want to write the electronic or the paper English 12 exam. If you were away today, see Mrs. Kavaliunus in the office to make your choice - I was asked to return the choices by Friday, but I will be away.

The poetry assignment, your task for the two days while I am away, is explained in the posts on this blog for Thursday and Friday. If you have any questions, I will check my school email
Tuesday
We began the class with Today's Meet and some poetry terms & devices practice. Next, I gave out some looooove poems. We began with the sonnet. In pairs, you were to discover the "rules" for the English sonnet. Well done everyone: 14 lines, iambic pentameter, abab cdcd efef gg, octave/sestet. We then tried our hands a competitive sonneteering, writing love sonnets to our favourite foods. The results were judged and prizes awarded.

Monday
After a little fun with anagrams, we moved into pairs and returned to the poetry of Sylvia Plath. Her poem "In Plaster" fuelled some interesting conversations around the room. The ticket out the door today was a theme statement about the poem and a quote to support the theme statement.

(dadams@sd71.bc.ca) on Thursday evening, as well I will check it at least once a day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
