Monday, October 5 - Friday, October 9
Friday
After silent reading we did the quiz on short story terms and marked it. I returned the draft character responses to The Painted Door. The good copy of these is due on Wednesday. For the remainder of the class there was time to work on the Canadian voice chart, the Venn diagram for the two poems, or the creative response.
Presentations of the Creative response to either Song for the Homeless or Living Room will be done on Friday, Oct16.
Thursday
Quiz on short story terms tomorrow!
We practiced some of the short story terms using Today's Meet. Afterwards, we returned to the subject of the Creative Response. I threw out a few more ideas for responses: deliver a monologue in-role, PSA, diary entry, film trailer, sketches, video, drawings, sculpture, interview, short play, imaginative narrative. I handed-out rubrics that I found online to that we could decide what the criteria for this assignment would be. At then end of the class there was 20 minutes of work time.
Wednesday
After discussing frame stories, stories-within-stories and embedded quotes (again!), I handed out the first speaking assignment for the term. This is called a Creative Response. You are to pick either Song for the Homeless or Living Room and create an artifact/response to the poem. Remember, you are not explaining the poem; however, your in depth understanding of the poem should be evident and your artifact should contribute to the class' understanding. T
The Venn Diagram about the poems is now downgraded to something you do either by hand or with Word. Put it into your portfolio. Don't forget to continue adding to the chart: Is there a Canadian Voice?

Tuesday
Reminder: there will be a quiz on short story terms on Friday. In preparation for the quiz, we had a look at frame stories and stories within stories. As I walked around the room, people came up with great examples of frame stories used in film: Titanic, The Matrix, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan to name a few. The remainder of the class was spent in the library trying to get the online Venn Diagram creation tool I chose to work! If the program is driving you crazy, by all means use Word or something else (I am asking that this NOT be hand drawn). The elements to include are:
• subject / ideas
• features / style: setting, situation, imager, patterns, comparisons, word choices, mood, patterns
• purpose / theme
• form / structure / organization
Monday
A reminder that you are expected to be adding to the chart we began some time ago about the inquiry question: Is there a Canadian voice? So far we have "read" the following texts: Pardon Me I'm Canadian, Rick Mercer rants x3, No Canada, 50 of Canada's Most Influential People, The Painted Door, Song for the Homeless, The Living Room. Using Today's Meet, we checked the class' understanding of the following terms: juxtaposition, prosperity, destitution, incongruity. I split the class into groups and we began to look at the two Canadian poems in the following ways: subject matter, context and form, word choices used. Tomorrow we will do a Venn Diagram using an online creative tool to compare the poems.
