Thursday
I was away today at a workshop. I left copies of The Bastard short story for everyone so you could finish reading it. Below are my directions for the TOC:
Students should read their novel for the first 10-15 minutes
Give them copies of “The Bastard,” but please ask them to refrain from writing on them so I can use them with my other grade 12 classes.
We almost finished reading the story yesterday in class. They need to read the last page.
After reading, they should complete the notes they took about any mention of: the 7 Deadly Sins or animals.
Next activity: In pairs, or groups of 3 if necessary, they should prepare a rubric containing a set of criteria for the quintessential villain – encourage them to research this on their devices so they get a full set of criteria.
For example: represents a particular sin or vice; different from the rest of the characters, has a level of deception, they often have a plan that moves the plot along, they are the opposite of heroes, they are on the cusp of achieving their evil ends before the final battle, character’s downfall is brought on by their own flaws (why am I telling you all this? I am sure you can do a much better job than I can!)

Once they have established a set of criteria, they must make a rubric. After they have created a rubric, they must evaluate and grade a villain of their choosing AND they must also evaluate and grade the Bastard in the story. They must hand in the rubric at the end of class. They will have to explain their rubric and the evaluations to the class on Monday. Or, if there is enough time, have them do it with you today.

Wednesday
We did more work on reviewing essay structure. Afterwards, we almost finished reading The Bastard short story.

Tuesday
We began today with more review on essay structure. Following that, we looked up the definition for the word 'bastard.' All the definitions were put on the board: who knew it is the name of a town in Norway among other things. I read the first third of the story and we did a little activity called "Gambling on Predictons."

Monday
Today we finished listening to (most of!) the remaining Creative Responses.
