THE BIG IDEAS for English 12

• Text and story deepen understanding of complex and abstract ideas.
• The exploration of text and story deepens understanding of one’s identity, others and the world.
• People understand text differently depending on their worldviews and perspectives.
• Texts are socially, culturally, geographically and historically constructed.
• Language shapes ideas and influences others.

What counts in this class?
Observations, conversations, products:
Potentially everything you do, say, or create counts. You will generate potential evidence of learning every day in class. It will be up to you to show your learning and provide evidence that you understand the BIG ideas listed above. This will include, but not be limited to, paragraphs, essays, oral presentations, and tests. You will use a folder to collect your evidence. At various points during the semester we will review the evidence you have collected and whether you are hitting the main learning targets. If you are producing enough quality products all semester, if you are interacting with others in ways that show your learning, if you can talk about your learning in an informed way, then you will do well. REMEMBER, that everything – all evidence of learning – is of value because, potentially, everything is considered part of your evaluation.

How will I know what is expected of me on assignments?
The expectations for content and quality for major, end of unit evaluations will be explained to you by showing you quality examples from students and through the use of rubrics which explain in detail the evaluation requirements. 

What about the Provincial EXAM?
60% of your grade for English 12 comes from the evidence of learning you provide all during the semester.  The other 40% comes from the provincial exam.  We will spend time looking at the exam, discussing strategies for success when writing the exam and we will do weekly review of the terms and devices that you are expected to know for the exam.
Silent Reading 
We will be reading daily, so please be prepared.

Thursday I will be at school by 8:00-ish tomorrow. I will have doughnuts and coffee/tea ready.  1. Read two of the synthesis pieces from a past exam. 2. Monday, January 11 - Friday, January 15

Friday At the beginning of the class, reading time was made available for everyone to tackle more of the Hemingway story. We will use this story to help review synthesis essays. I ran through some review of synthesis essay writing, and put a poster up in the room that shows what things to use in a synthesis essay plan. We will look at this in more detail on Monday. Thursday There is so much great literature in the world, but one writer everyone should read (in my opinion) is Hemingway. Today we did a brief bit of background on Hemingway via the Interwebs and through the depiction of him in Midnight in Paris. I read the first six pages of the story "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber" aloud; somehow the class deteriorated into the sounds African animals make (my fault, I think - although I do think I do a particularly strong zebra imitation). Thursday Mark multiple choice for the poem response section of the poetry test. To be or not to be… 2 column note taking and personal response: Discuss the similarities and differences in the two versions you selected: were lines cut; did it matter;  setting (time and place); props; lighting/atmosphere; staging of scene (movement(s) of actor); t race Hamlet’s arguments/mood/tone of voice throughout the soliloquy.
