Friday
It was a bittersweet class for me today. I feel fortunate to have had such a wonderful group of grade 12s for my first semester at Isfeld, but I am sad to see you go. I know every one of you will do well on the exam. You have made great progress in the course. Good luck. Don't forget to try to make it to the English 12 breakfast on Monday morning which starts at 8:15.
Thursday
We completed a review of irony today, and we finished discussing the story Act of God. Following that, we did another exam practice in pairs - this time with a non-fiction piece. Towards the end of the class, we began looking at the lighter side of literature: satire, comedy, farce, pun, parody.

Wednesday
At the beginning of the class, we reviewed soliloquy, interior monologue, dramatic monologue, stream of consciousness and monologue. Next we completed did a review activity for the three types of irony. After discussing the differences between and Act of God, Divine Intervention and Miracle, we read "An Act of God". We will take up the story again tomorrow and discuss its use of irony.
Tuesday
Shakespeare! Today we raced through two soliloquies from Hamlet. The initial Listen. Sketch. Summarize. seemed to work well for many of you. You had figured out the answer to the question: What's bothering Hamlet? with relative ease. Next we took a look at an overview video which presented a summary of the entire play. Finally, we listen to and read through the "To be, or not to be" soliloquy and discussed it. Keywords from today were: soliloquy, iambic pentameter, blank verse, dramatic monologue, interior monologue and stream of consciousness.
Monday
Today was the day of the sonnet. After looking at a brief, overview video for the sonnet, we reviewed the two main types of sonnets: the Italian and the Shakespearean sonnet. As an example of an Italian sonnet form we looked at How I Spend My Light. For the Shakespearean sonnet we went over Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day. At the very end of the class we took a quick look at Ozymandius which is basically an Italian sonnet, but with changes in the rhyme scheme.
