Friday
I thought we might get to sonnets today; however, I got a bit distracted by the McLaren P1 (shhhh!). We did manage to go through a section of the provincial exam and I think a few people may have been surprised at how tricky multiple choice can be. Remember, always go back to the text and think about what it is saying or not saying, try to eliminate all the wrong answers as well as deciding on the right answer. We also looked at the break down of the exam sections and the time guidelines. Use this link: English 12 Exams to take you to other exams.
Thursday
Musical poetry chairs in class today! I gave out the poem Mirror by Sylvia Plath and in pairs, everyone rotated around the room looking at different aspects of the poem at each stop: title, diction/tone, word order, sound, figurative language, speaker, setting, symbols, form, ideas/theme. I was very impressed at the level of understanding that came out of this exercise. Thoughtful, insightful comments were made about the poem and you used the text of the poem to support your comments. Tomorrow: THE SONNET!
Wednesday
We only managed to cover one short little poem by Sylvia Plath today. However, I thoroughly enjoyed going over the top 10 facts everyone research about her. I also had a lot of fun modelling how to complete a close reading of her poem Metaphors. The fact that poetry can be a bit of a riddle was clearly demonstrated in this poem. Well done to everyone who figured out the answer to Plath's riddle. Do you think it is significant that the girls (I think) figured it out first? You should continue to use the orange close reading sheet to guide your reading of poems so that consideration of those 10 elements becomes automatic. Keep in mind that you do not have to go through the steps in the order presented on the page, except leave theme for the end. We will continue with a few more of Plath's poems tomorrow.
Tuesday
Hmmm... We had a look at the poem Choices from yesterday. I handed out progress reports and returned the term 2 novel essays. That was about it? Somehow I was coerced into a game of Pictionary, which the girls dominated!

Monday
I was away today. I left instructions with the TOC for you to read two poems: "Choices" and "Shall I Compare Thee..." For the first poem, I requested that you read and answer the questions that accompany the poem. We will discuss the answers tomorrow. For the sonnet, I asked that you use the orange Close Reading format and look at the sonnet based on each item on the sheet. You were to write directly on your copy of the sonnet. Again, we will take this poem up in class when I return.
