Friday
Today was the second of two days scheduled to work on the term 2 novel essay.
Thursday
I was away this afternoon. I left the criteria sheets for the term 2 novel essay with the TOC. Hopefully everyone made a good start on the essay.
Wednesday
We were scheduled to begin the term novel essay today; however, the network was down so we decided to postpone the essay until tomorrow. Instead, we took a look at some of the more challenging poetry terms and poetic forms. Although it is no longer on the terms and devices list for the exam, we took a quick look at metonymy and synecdoche. The trick to remembering which is which is to remember "nymy" suggests "name" and metonymy is replacing one word/idea with a thing that is symbolic of that thing: "the pen is mightier than the sword" - pen represents literature/words/writing. Synecdoche is using a part to represent the whole ex. He asked for her hand in marriage; Lend me a hand; Nice wheels. At the end of the class we turned to a brief run through of lyrics, odes and elegies. An ode honours/praises someone/something. An elegy is more sombre and often mourns the passing of someone/something. Finally, I mentioned pastorals which idealize/glorify/romanticize country life/scenes/settings making them seem charming and simple.
Tuesday
Today was the last day to tackle your term novel reading during class because tomorrow you will begin the in-class essay for that novel. We were going to do the Poetry War about "Song for the Homeless" however, I was finding it difficult to fairly give points. Upon reflection, I think we need to have done a bit more poem close reading BEFORE trying to do the Poetry War. We will pick this up again once the term essays are completed. At the end of the class, I handed out a pink paper with definitions for most of the poetry terms and devices that may appear on the provincial. Everyone in the class has two terms for which they must find examples and then put those examples on the shared document for class use.
Monday
I was so touched and impressed by the personal narratives that were written last week in class that I just had to read a few aloud in class. I hope no one felt slighted that I didn't pick theirs to read - you should all feel proud of the progress you have made with your writing this semester. Unfortunately, as you know, we just don't have enough time to read them all aloud in class. We have moved on to poetry for the remainder of the semester. We took a look at "Song for the Homeless..." (please allow me to shorten that title!) in order to prepare for a Poetry War tomorrow between the girls and the boys.
