Thursday
We spent a good portion of the class reviewing terms and devices related to short stories. Tomorrow is the day for the presentation of the micro-fiction stories!
Wednesday
Today you wrote your editing quiz based on errors I noted in the synthesis piece about The Bastard. After the quiz, we returned to working on the micro-fictions. In the links section of this blog there are a variety of web sites you can check for examples of micro-fiction and twisters/tweets. Several students showed me their works in progress today. I can tell you are working hard on the twist at the end of the story based on conversations I am overhearing in class and based on what you have shown me. I am impressed by the thought and cleverness shown in the stories I have seen so far. Looking forward to reading more tomorrow. Homework for tomorrow is to have at least two stories completed so that we can do some peer editing.
Don't forget about due dates on the horizon. Friday is the LAST day for your paragraph about A.A.Gill's steak article; it is also the due date for good copies of the synthesis piece about The Bastard.
Tuesday
I returned the synthesis pieces today that were written about The Bastard and Who I'm Not or Faking It. The ones that I received were very good. I am noticing continued improvement in the writing and thinking that is being submitted. For those who did not submit the synthesis piece, you have until Friday and to turn it in and you will receive no feedback because your work is late. For those who did the first draft, you may stay with the grade I penciled on your first draft, or you can choose to improve the piece and submit a second draft on Friday. Friday is absolutely the last call for the synthesis piece and the bias piece on A. A Gill's steak article. I gave out an edit practice sheet based on some of the common writing errors I found in the synthesis papers. There will be a quiz on these types of errors tomorrow. For the remainder of the class, we worked on the micro-fictions. I shared a new type with you: Twisters which are 140 characters in length and again have the twist at the conclusion. Don't forget that you will be presenting your best two micro-fictions in class on Friday.
Monday
We viewed a few more short films from Vimeo and the Imagination Series because they capture so well the spirit of micro-stories. I shared some guidelines from the Guardian newspaper outlining some points to remember when writing micro-fiction. Finally, I gave you the criteria for your micro-fictions. You are to begin with a drabble which is a micro-story of exactly 100 words, no more, no less!
