Friday
We spent a bit too much of today's class reviewing (via a raucous game) some of the more unfamiliar/difficult exam terms. Afterwards, we took a quick look at some sample synthesis exam questions. I asked you to highlight the verb in the question so you know what you are being asked to do and then I asked you to highlight the key words in the rest of the question. These are both good strategies for the Provincial Exam. We will discuss these types of questions more next week.
Thursday
Parent Teacher Interviews
Wednesday
Steak Flexes its Muscle paragraphs were due today. It was also the last date to hand-in the term essay on your banned book without a time penalty (time meaning spending some of your free time at school tomorrow). I offered you two readings today: Who I am Not (fiction) and Faking It (non-fiction). Your next task will be to assess which piece (discuss The Bastard and either Who I Am Not or Faking It) demonstrates the greater drawbacks being an imposter imposes on living a happy life. You will be writing a synthesis piece which means bringing together your ideas about two texts. We will do some planning for the writing in groups and co-construct the criteria for a synthesis piece over the next few days.
Tuesday
We finished up reading The Bastard short story today and confirmed your final predictions. Tomorrow we will start a short written piece about a topic of your choice related to the story. Don't forget that the paragraph on Steak Flexes its Muscles is due tomorrow.
Monday
*** Don't forget to turn-in late term 1 essays before Wednesday otherwise you will be invited to attend school on Thursday in order to complete this missing work.
There were a number of concerns raised about the Portfolio Term assessment paper that everyone filled-in last week. At this point, my plan is to remove it from the report card altogether. I will bring it up in class tomorrow and we can discuss.
We went to the library to pick out new novels for this term. The themes for this term are:
who gets to decide
what are out limitations
what matters the most
are we progressing or regressing
who gets to decide
These themes will be the basis for the term paper this term. Your task will be to compare a non-fiction article (which I will make available on your chosen theme) with your novel. More details on this assignment will be provided soon.
We also went through the list of Provincial Exam terms and devices today and identified the most unfamiliar/challenging terms. These will be featured on the Friday game/activity. One week this Friday, there will be a quiz on these same terms.
We returned to the short story "The Bastard" and found the answer to Friday's burning prediction/question. Tomorrow we will finish reading the story.
