Friday
Hooray! It took all week for me to get there, but we finally began reading "The Bastard" today. You will just have to wait until next week to see if your predictions about the Bastard and Wilson's daughter are correct. We also spent some time reviewing exam terms and devices with the Grade 10 flashcards which unfortunately seem to be missing the word simile??? Term papers on the banned/challenged books were due today. As long as I get your papers emailed to me over the weekend, that will be fine. Hopefully everyone filled in their evidence sheets for the term assessments. Have a great weekend.
Thursday
Essays!!! I had big plans to begin the short story "The Bastard" today - seems like I have been trying to start that story for weeks now! Most of the class was spent discussing the term essay; working on the term essay. It's due tomorrow, so I hope the time today was helpful.
Wednesday
Today we did some "meta-work". I asked you to go through your writing folder and pull out evidence of your learning in the key areas of: thinking, writing/representing, listening/speaking, reading/responding. I was really pleased with the thoughtfulness of questions you were asking about your learning and evidence. Next, we returned to the pre-reading work for the short story "The Bastard". We made some connections between the things on the word/terms web. Unfortunately we did not have a chance to get going on "Gambling on Predictions"!
Tuesday
Today we marked Friday's quiz; marks looked pretty darn good. You are doing yourself a huge favour by tackling all these terms a few at a time. On Friday, we will try the recipe card activity again for terms and devices practice. Next, in preparation for reading the short story "The Bastard" we did a web activity looking at the following words/terms: bastard (various meanings); the seven deadly sins; quintessential villains from adventure stories. Tomorrow we may actually begin reading the story at last!
Monday
I handed back the Hemingway essays today. I also gave out progress reports to those who received their essays back today. During silent reading this week you may work on your novel autograph, your essay outline, or your essay. Hopefully you are finished reading your book! Next we turned back (again!) to Gill's article about Steak. By now you should have a very colourful copy of the article. We tried "substitution poetry" using a sample paragraph and modelling our first sentence on what another writer had done. I was impressed by how well your first sentences worked out! Next you will have to discuss your three bias technique choices and how Gill uses them to manipulate your feelings/opinions about steak.
